I use the standard deduction. What are some general things I can do to reduce my taxes?

Here are a few things that could help you reduce your tax liability:

  • Bunch expenses
Calculate expenses that are typically spent over two or three years and bunch them all together in one year. For example: If you donate three years worth of cash or goods in one year (and hold off on the next two years) you might accumulate enough itemized expenses to reduce taxes. Or, save for a particular charity for two years, and then in the third year give it all.
  • Bunch itemized deductions
Bunching also works for miscellaneous itemized deductions, if you have unreimbursed employee business expenses that are subject to a minimum of 2% of your adjusted gross income.
  • Maximize retirement savings
Always try to maximize the amount of retirement savings (IRA or other retirement savings vehicles). You receive a tax deduction (or tax incentives in the case of a Roth IRA) for paying yourself!
